Grand Cayman Fishing

A Grand Cayman deep-sea fishing charter is a great experience.  You will enjoy the crystal-clean Cayman waters, see the beautiful coastline from a boat, meet a great local Charter Captain, and catch some fish.

Catching a Wahoo, Mahi, Tuna, or Snapper is great fun.  Being able to eat your catch adds to that experience. Most Cayman Island fishing charters will let you keep some or all of the catch. The key is to discuss it with them ahead of time.

Cleaning the CatchIf you are interested in keeping the fish you catch on a Cayman Islands fishing charter; the best thing is to discuss this with the captain before hand.  Most are happy to accommodate. “The guests always come first when it comes to the fish.  We will clean and fillet the fish and pack them in plastic bags for you,” says Captain Stephen Ebanks of Reel Vibes Charters It would be best if you planned on bringing a cooler and ice to store and transport the fish to keep the meat fresh and wholesome. If you catch more fish than you will use,  it is good practice to let the captain and crew keep the extra.

You Hook'em We Cook'em

If you are staying in a hotel and don’t have cooking facilities, many restaurants on the island will cook your fish for you. Expect to pay a fee for your dinner, similar to a corkage fee for wine. The meal will typically include side dishes as well.  You can let the restaurant staff know how you like it prepared and cook you a great meal. Here is a list of some restaurants that will cook your catch for you.

Eva, at Morgan’s Seafood Restaurant, says, “ we are happy to cook your catch. We provide side dishes and sauces. We charge a “plating” fee that depends on if it is for lunch or dinner. We provide the sides and sauces. Of course, you can order other food from the menu.

Here are a few tips:

  • Keep the fish cold, pack the fillets in ziplock bags, and pack them in a cooler.
  • Stick to the preparations that the restaurant usually serves. For example, if a restaurant serves grilled or broiled fish, don’t expect them to fry your fish.
  • The restaurant and waitstaff provide unique service. Consider adding an extra gratuity to offset any savings from regular menu prices.
