Grand Cayman Fishing Report for March 26, 2023

Fishing was good in Grand Cayman during the period of March 20-26, 2023. Many anglers reported catching fish close to the island and at Grand Cayman’s 12-Mile Bank. Pelagic species were abundant, including wahoo, yellowfin tuna, barracuda, blackfin tuna, and dolphin (Mahi-Mahi).

There have been numerous reports of large, fast-moving schools of biggish yellowfin tuna breaking the surface close to shore at the typical spots, East End, Northwest Point, and South Sound.  Although abundant, the fish have been challenging to hook up. The preferred method of Chunking and drifting was unproductive.  Frustrated anglers are thinking live bait may produce better results.

One of Cayman’s most preferred fishing charters is Captain Chris from Captain Chris Charters. His guests had a great time on a deep-sea fishing trip this week and landed a 40lb wahoo close to shore by Papagallo aboard Reel Slow. He also reported catching a few small Mahi-Mahi (Dolphin) too. Captain Chris Moore continues to catch fish for his guests consistently. His charter trips have produced a good number of large wahoo this season.  Great job, Captain!

Captain Omar from Morning Spirit charters again demonstrated why he is a favorite charter for Cayman guests. Shawn from Colorado has done his share of deep-sea fishing on the west coast off of California. Recently his teenage son joined him on a few trips but had yet to enjoy the thrill of landing a big game fish. Captain Omar’s mission was to change that.

His guests from Colorado had a great day fishing at the 12-Mile Bank, catching a 20lb wahoo on skirted ballyhoo trolled with the use of a downrigger. They also caught a large barracuda and 26 flying fish. During the full-day charter, they also did reef fishing and landed triggerfish and yellowtail snapper.  As usual, Captain Omar and his mate Adrian do more than run the boat and the lines. They pass along local knowledge and tips.  Besides learning how to land a beautiful wahoo and other fish, Adrian taught the young man how to rig bait and use the gear.  This is an experience that both the parents and the son will remember for the rest of their lives!
