Grand Cayman Fishing Report. It was time for the Christmas Trio of Roshad, Deal, and Rick to head out for a late afternoon trip to Grand Cayman’s Twelve Mile Bank. First Stop: Morgan’s Harbour to fill the live well with some live Goggle Eyes from Captain Omar of Morning Spirit Charters. Today, we will be fishing with Live Bait!
The wind had settled, and the seas calmed. This made for a smooth, fast trip on Makeover to 12-Mile Bank Grand Cayman. It also gave me a chance to hear a few stories from Deal as we passed by West Bay Grand Cayman.
As usual, when “drifting” at 12 Mile Bank Grand Cayman, the first task is to check the current to determine where to position the boat to fish.
The current was running at approx. 110°
We set our drift at the “top” of the bank. We were greeted by diving Man-O-Wars (Frigatebirds)
Roshad set the boat for the drift, and we quickly got lines in the water. It was Roshad who had the first hook-up. A nice 35 lb Yellowfin Tuna. He had his hands full and coach me as I manned the gaff. Bam! Bullseye, right behind the gill plate. Beginners luck!
Next, it was Mister Deal’s turn. He put aside his old school hand line yo-yo rig for a rod and reel as we were losing light. No problem. He showed he is the “Reel Deal” with great form, a patient approach, and a big smile! Fantastically, we had another 30lb+ yellowfin for the fishbag.
After Deal’s beautiful Yellowfin, Roshad landed another 25lb+ on the next drift. Nice fish! three Tuna in the fish bag!
What about Rick? It was my goal to catch a Wahoo on the drift. I was fishing with the Google Eyes on a wire leader. The wire leader is essential for Wahoo as they have over 100 razor-sharp teeth that would quickly and cleanly cut through the fluorocarbon leader. For the last drift of the day, I changed to fluorocarbon leader with hopes of at least one fish. Sure enough, I was hooked up. This felt big and strong, making long runs and taking lots of lines. It didn’t feel like a Yellowfin. Sure enough, after a 15-minute back-and-forth battle, the fish was off! Shucks! I retrieved the line to see the fluorocarbon leader cut clean! That was the wahoo I was fishing for! Anglers make plans, and the fish laugh!
