Grand Cayman Fishing Charter

Bank Withdrawal!

Grand Cayman Fishing Reports for Sunday, January 15, 2023. I have been longing to reel in some tuna. It has been almost a full year since I landed a yellowfin tuna in Grand Cayman qaters. I have been watching the weather,  checking the catches of local anglers, so lining up fishing buddies, adjusting my calendar, and choosing a fishing charter for a day drifting and chunking for yellowfin.

The plan was coming together. Earlier this week, a few anglers reported some nice yellowfin tuna caught at the bank. Tom from Fishangler recently arrived back on the island and wanted to fish too. For this reason, Clayton from ReelAddiction Charters was available. His 34′ Venture center console,  so ReelAddiction, is powered by twin 300 Suzuki outboards, is fully outfitted for fishing, and is in pristine condition. After that, we were joined by his brother Cameron from Liquid Limo Charters. A great team!

Balmy winds and calm seas made for a great ride to Grand Caymans’ famous Twelve-Mile Bank. We left the Cayman Islands Yacht Club around 6:45 am. The 30-minute ride aboard ReelAddiction to Twelve-Mile Bank was quick and comfortable.By and large the beautiful sunrise at 7:00 am was just the beginning of a spectacular day on the water.

Cameron and Clayton checked the current on the bank’s top with a 5lb weight attached by a fishing line to a bleach bottle and plastic bag. The current was running swiftly at 30 degrees. That told  experienced anglers that bait would be “pushed” towards the northwest corner. Our wireline quickly hooked up, so a good-sized barracuda as we made our way to the NW corner. Fresh Bait! Unforgettable experience Grand Cayman Fishing.

Tuna Time!

Days like this bring out lots of boats. We were 1 of 15 or so boats. A few tunas had already been caught, and there was lots of chatter on the radio between boats. On our first drift, Tom landed a nice 25 lb yellowfin. A great start. Meanwhile, I had my bait and hook cut off twice by a wahoo. Time to switch to wire leaders. On the next drift, I landed a 35 lb yellowfin. My thirst for tuna was quenched.  On the next drift, Cameron dropped a vertical slow-pitch style jig. Boom! The spinning reel screamed, and the rod belt was down. Tom took over and had a good, long, fun fight on the light gear and boated a 20lb yellowfin.  Grand Cayman Fishing Charters Rick Hagopian fishcaymanislands.com Grand Cayman Fishing Grand Cayman Fishing Charter
